WHAT IS A MOTHER

by: Helen Steiner Rice

It takes a Mother’s love to make a house a home,
A place to be remembered, no matter where we roam...
It takes a Mother’s patienceto bring a child up right,
And her courage and her cheerfulness to make a dark day bright...
It takes a Mother’s thoughtfulness to mend the heart’s deep “hurts,”
And her skill and her endurance to mend little socks and shirts...
It takes a Mother’s kindness to forgive us when we err,
To sympathize in trouble and bow her head in prayer...
It takes a Mother’s wisdom to recognize our needs
And to give us reassurance by her loving words and deeds...
It takes a Mother’s endless faith, her confidence and trust
To guide us through the pitfalls of selfishness and lust...
And that is why in all this world there could not be another
Who could fulfill God’s purpose as completely as a Mother!

I woke up oh so quietly

and out to the yard I crept,

To pick my Mom some flowers

as she lay in bed and slept.

I'll wait a few more hours

And give the flowers to her then.

For now I think the best gift

Is to let her just sleep in!

WHEN MOM GETS SICK.......

Notes from a man TRYING to make Mom's life easier while she is sick in bed.....

Monday A.M.
Dearest: Sleep late. Everything under control. Lunches packed. Kids off to school. Menu for dinner planned. Your lunch is on a tray in refrigerator: fruit-cup, finger-sandwiches.  Thermos of hot tea by bedside. See you around six.

Tuesday A.M.
Honey: Sorry about the egg rack in the refrigerator. Hope you got back to sleep. Did the kids tell you about the Coke I put in the thermoses? The school might call you on this.  Dinner may be a little late. I'm doing your door-to-door canvas for liver research. Your lunch is in refrigerator. Hope you like leftover chili.

Wednesday A.M.
Dear Doris: Why in the name of all that is sane would you put soap powder in the flour canister! If you have time, could you please come up with a likely spot for Chris's missing shoes? We've checked the clothes hamper, garage, back seat of the car and wood box. Did you know the school has a ruling on
bedroom slippers? There's some cold pizza for you in a napkin in the oven drawer. Will be late tonight. Driving eight Girl Scouts to tour meat-packing house.

Thursday A.M.
Doris: Don't panic over water in hallway. It crested last night at
9 P.M. Will finish laundry tonight. Please pencil in answers to following:
1. How do you turn on the garbage disposal?
2. How do you turn off the milkman?
3. Why would that rotten kid leave his shoes in his boots?
4. How do you remove a Confederate flag inked on the palm
of a small boy's hand?
5. What do you do with leftovers when they begin to snap at you when you open the refrigerator door? I don't know what you're having for lunch! Surprise me!

Friday A.M.
Hey: Don't drink from pitcher by the sink. Am trying to restore pink dress shirt to original white. Take heart. Tonight, the ironing will be folded, house cleaned and dinner on time....... I called your mother.

MOM
-John Greenleaf Whittier

A picture memory brings to me;
I look across the years and see
Myself beside my mother's knee.
I feel her gentle hand restrain
My selfish moods, and know again
A child's blind sense of wrong and pain.
But wiser now,
a man gray grown,
My childhood's needs are better known.
My mother's chastening love I own.

Anna M. Jarvis on the Purpose of Mother's Day

"...To revive the dormant filial love and gratitude we owe to those  who gave us birth. To be a home tie for the absent. To obliterate  family estrangement. To create a bond of brotherhood through the
wearing of a floral badge. To make us better children by getting us
closer to the hearts of our good mothers. To brighten the lives of
good mothers. To have them know we appreciate them, though we do not show it as often as we ought...

Mothers Day is to remind us of our duty before it is too late. This
day is intended that we may make new resolutions for a more active
thought to our dear mothers. By words, gifts, acts of affection, and
in every way possible, give her pleasure, and make her heart glad
every day, and constantly keep in memory Mothers Day; when you made
this resolution, lest you forget and neglect your dear mother, if
absent from home write her often, tell her of a few of her noble good
qualities and how you love her.

A mother's love is new every day. God bless our faithful good
mothers.
